Biography
Born in Moscow in traditional opera family. His grandfather Maxim Dormidontovich Mikhailov was one of the best Russian basses of “BOLSHOI”. In 1987 Maxim Mikhailov won Glinka Vocal Competition followed his join to Opera “BOLSHOI” as principal soloist. His international career began in 1993 when he won International Belvedere Competition in Vienna. In 1994 -1998 Maxim Mikhailov was invited to Easter Festival in Salzburg for Boris Godunov under Claudio Abbado. Made his debut in Nantes as Prince Khovansky in Mussorgsky’s Khovanschchina. With De Nederlandse Opera he performed Tchaikovsky’s Masepa and Shostakovich’s The Nose. In 1996 made his debut with Royal Opera House “Covent Garden” as Masetto in Don Giovanni. In 1997 Maxim Mikhailov appeared as Warlaam and Schchelkalov at Houston Grand Opera . Next year he performed Golaud in Pelleas et Melisande in Nantes, made his debut at Wiener Volksoper as Sarastro and returned to Covent Garden for Rimsky-Korsakov’s Golden Cockerel.         In 1999 he made his debut with La Monnaie in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, with Opera de Paris in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol and Le Renard, conducted by James Conlon (recorded by EMI) and with Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra as Prince Gremin , conducted by R. Lloyd-Johnes. Maxim Mikhailov began year 2000 as Banquo with De Norske Opera in Oslo, performed for the first time the title role in Boris Godunov in Nantes. Then Maxim appeared at Herodias Atticus Festival in Athens as Fasolt in Goetz Fridrich production Das Reihngold and made his debut with Finnish National Opera as Warlaam in Boris Godunov.         Year 2001 Maxim Mikhailov get started with debut at Opera de Paris Bastille in Queen of Spades and his debut at Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Golova in Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night. Later this year he sung Filippo II in Verdi’s Don Carlo for Irish National Opera in Dublin.         Year 2002 Maxim began with R. Wilson/A. Pappano Aida production in La Monnaie as IL Re . With Pasdeloup Orchestra performed Beethoven’s 9-th Symphony in Pallais Pleielle, Paris. He made his debut in Gran Teatro del Liceu as Pope in Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, returned to De Nederlandse Opera for revival of The Nose.         Year 2003 began with Queen of Spades in Liceu and concerting performance of Samson et Dalila as Old Hebrew in Strassbourg. He appeared as Kecal in Bartered Bride in Bologna. In 2004 made his debut in San-Diego, CA  as Timur in Turandot and returned to Covent Garden for A. Pappano/ R. Johnes Lady Macbeth of Mzensk. Same year Maxim Mikhailov made his debut with Glyndebourne Opera Festival in Rachmaninov’s The Miserly Knight and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and at  BBC Proms Festival, London  with Glyndebourne productions and Stravinsky’s Le Renard.       2005 brought Maxim Mikhailov to Naples for debut at Teatro San Carlo as Tomsky in Queen of Spades. He returned to Paris for War and Peace as Dolokhov/Ermolov at Bastille , made his debut at Teatro del Maestranza in Seville, recorded Stravinsky’s Les Noces in Berlin with RIAS-Choir for Harmonia Mundi , sung Les Noces at Festival Aix-En-Provence and in Amsterdam.      In season 2005-2006 Maxim Mikhailov made his debut: at Unter Den Linden German State Opera in Berlin and in recital performing of Shostakovich’s The Gamblers under V.Jurowski at La Scala in Mailand , returned to Glyndebourne Opera Festival with Prokofiev’s Duenna, and to Covent Garden for revival of Lady Macbeth of Mzensk . Sung D. Shostakovich’s “Michelangelo Songs” at festival “Settembre Musica” in Turin with Boris Petrushanski (piano) and in Berliner Konzerthaus with Konzerthaus Orchestra under Tomas Sanderling.       Season 2006 – 2007 brought Maxim for his debut to Lissabon in “San Carlo” as Hunding in “Walkure”, recital performances of A. Schnitke “The story of Doctor Faust” in Mailand under V. Jurowski, recitals with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and back to La Scala with “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”.  In 2008 Maxim Mikhailov did return to Glyndebourne Opera Festival for “Eugene Onegin” as Zaretski/covering Gremin and made his debut in Teatro La Fenice, Venice, Italy as Warlaam in “Boris Godunov”.   In 2009 Maxim did return to London for recitals with LPO and Age of Enlightenment Orchestra , sung 13 th Symphony of Shostakovich with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in Oslo under Mikhail Jurowski, performed in role of Devil in “TheTzarina’s Slippers” (Cherevichki) in ROH Covent Garden, London and made his debut on stage of Teatro Municipal, Santiago de Chili as The Pope in “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”. Year 2010 Maxim begin with MET productions of “Stiffelio” and “Hamlet”. His future plans include concerting performances of “Queen of Spades” with Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and return to Opera de Paris, Bastille for “The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh”
